Should I Clean My Wedding Dress Before the Wedding?

I Am Asked Often About The Need For Cleaning a Wedding Dress Before The Wedding.

The answer is simple...but maybe it's just too obvious for the Bride who wants her wedding gown to look perfect.

If you bought a new dress and you don't have dirt, grass stains or other "junk" on your wedding dress, you should NOT need to get it cleaned before your wedding.

However, almost every wedding gown (new or not) worn outside for pictures will have dirt or grass stains around the hem. It's almost impossible to avoid this problem if you wear your dress outside.  A wedding photographer from Birmingham I was talking to recently told me that he tells all of his brides to expect dirt and grass stains on their wedding dress whenever making outside pictures.

If you just have a little dirt or grass stain on the hem, especially on the under side of the gown, you can either forget it or work on it yourself. Remember, the attention will be on YOU during your wedding, not on the hem of your wedding dress.

If your wedding gown is polyester, follow this link to an earlier blog post I wrote on getting grass stains out of polyester wedding gowns.  Don't try to remove the stains from a silk dress yourself.  Most people don't have the right ingredients or knowledge and can easily damage silk wedding gowns.  Polyester wedding gowns are much more forgiving.  Of course, a qualified wedding gown specialist can help you with stains on your dress...but make sure the dry cleaner is experienced with wedding gowns.

If you bought a second-hand wedding gown, such as a consignment shop gown or a bridal shop sample gown, you can judge of how clean it is.  Our experience has been that we can really make the white wedding gown brighter if it been on display and handled for several months.

You might be pleasantly surprised at how helpful in removing stains (before your wedding) a wedding gown cleaning specialist might be if you agree to have your gown cleaned and preserved after your wedding.  I know we have a special program for Birmingham area Brides, our Gown Protection Plan, to help with stain removal before the wedding.  We also offer a special price when cleaning a wedding gown before and after the wedding.
