Alterations for Plus Size Wedding Dresses

Posted by David Whitehurst on December 17, 2011

A wedding is the one day a woman wants to feel her most beautiful and should be radiating confidence with every camera flash and champagne toast. A comfortably fitting wedding dress will reflect the self-assured glow from within, but an ill-fitting gown can be distracting and make you feel unattractive. As you shop for your dress, keep in mind that wedding gown alterations are key to flawless memories.

Although wedding dresses are made in a wide range of sizes and designed for multiple body types, it is still important that it fits your unique shape. A wedding dress must fit snugly and loosely in all of the right places in order to flow properly and, unlike more casual garments, problem areas cannot be concealed with a few safety pins or an oversized belt. The gown must be comfortable enough to wear for several hours through dances, bouquet tosses and photos with friends. Since all eyes will be on you, and you’ll have the pictures to prove it, it is important that your dress fit perfectly.

Buying a designer dress off the rack rarely means a perfect fit for anyone, let alone a woman with curves. Being a plus size bride, however, should not hold you back from having the dress of your dreams. Wedding dress alterations specialists including dressmakers and experienced seamstresses have all sorts of tricks up their sleeves to transform an ill fitting dress into a dream wedding gown.

Three things to keep in mind when buying a plus-size wedding dress

  • Extensive wedding dress alterations can be extremely time consuming and multiple visits require a larger budget.  Try to get a close fit...but don't expect a proper fit off the rack.
  • It is usually easier to take in your dress than let is out. My suggestion is to choose a dress that fits the largest part of your body first and plan on taking in the dress in the other areas.
  • Chat with your seamstress or dressmaker about your wedding gown alterations several months in advance (or at least as early as possible) to be sure you will look and feel your very best on your wedding day.

When buying a plus-size wedding dress (as with any size), check your ego at the door.  Most wedding dresses run in smaller sizes than traditional clothing today.  Don't be shocked at needing a larger size than you expect.  Just be comfortable in your dress, get the right fit and look great for your wedding.

Detachable Wedding Gown Train

Posted by David Whitehurst on April 14, 2011

Last week we discussed an option for a wedding dress bustle with a series of loops and pick ups. This is a great option if you’ve got a big train that you don’t want to be dragging around the reception or even in the grass, the dirt or the sand if you are hosting the festivities outside. However, another alternative is increasing in popularity, especially for young brides who are planning to dance the night away for hours at their reception!

What if you could just….take the train off?

Sounds a little crazy at first to those who were considering a more traditional approach. But imagine how convenient it could be.

Restoring and Restyling Second Generation Wedding Gowns

Posted by David Whitehurst on March 20, 2011

In Meg Cabot’s “Queen of Babble” series, the main character (Lizzie Nichols) finds a vintage designer gown in an attic, wrapped around a rusty old rifle. She is able to remove the rust stains (for she had vast experience with dresses, especially vintage ones) and the gown saves the day for a bride who has a wedding gown disaster.

Although this makes for a good story and is dumb novel luck, a Certified Wedding Gown SpecialistTM doesn’t need luck.  Instead we use our professional training and experience to avert your disasters so that your wedding gown looks perfect for your day.

Should You Wear Makeup When Getting Your Wedding Gown Alterations?

Posted by David Whitehurst on March 8, 2011

I was asked by a Bride-To-Be about whether she should wear makeup when she came in for her Birmingham, Alabama wedding dress alterations fitting.

Getting makeup on a wedding dress can cause problems so I recommend either wearing no makeup or using a makeup mask like the one illustrated in the photo above when you go in for your wedding gown fitting. Keep this in mind when putting on your dress for your wedding dress alterations...for your wedding pictures...or on your wedding day.

There are several varieties of makeup masks out there.  Just search for "makeup mask" and you can find them.  Since I pulled their photo off their web site, here is the link to the one illustrated above.

But anytime you put on your wedding dress (or any other quality garment), don't put on makeup while wearing the dress.  Put your makeup on first and use a makeup mask to protect the dress  while putting it on.

But what if you get makeup on your wedding dress on your wedding day?  Emergency Wedding Dress Cleaning!

Here are some quick fixes -

  • For a polyester wedding gown, mix a small amount of dish washing liquid (like Dawn, but any will work) with a little water.  Gently dab the mixture on the spot, let it work for a few minutes and then rinse using a wet white cotton cloth.  It may take 2 or 3 rinses like this.  And you may need to go another round with the dish washing liquid and then rinse again.  Let it dry.  If you don't have time for it to dry before your ceremony, us a blow dryer or just put a little baby powder on the white dress.
  • For a silk wedding gown, use a small amount of alcohol and apply with a q-tip or a white cotton towel.  Apply it and let it work for a few minutes.  Then blot gently.  The most important thing is to not rub the silk wedding gown.  You must protect the silk.  Let it dry for a few minutes and apply again if necessary.

Another approach is the Janie Stick.  This useful item is made of of a mix of clays and is good at removing or reducing most stains on most fabrics.  Just be gentle when applying it to a silk wedding gown.

But the bottom line is

"Only You Can Prevent Makeup

on Your Wedding Dress!"
